There are a number of ways you can make your charter trip on the lake more enjoyable and productive. |

|
Springtime temperatures on shore are generally 10-20 degrees warmer than on Lake Erie. The water is still cold enough to dictate ambient air temperature and as onshore temperature increases during the day, wind direction switches onshore as cold air moves toward the warmer land mass. This effect is experienced even until late spring and early summer. Before your trip, check the weather forecast and assume the temperature on the lake will be approximately 10 degrees cooler than the land forecast.
It is important for you to bring enough clothing to be comfortable. A good recommendation is raingear that also provides protection from the wind. Many times Lake Erie’s waves provide spray around the boat and a good set of raingear will keep you warm and dry. A lot of fish are caught during the rain and with good protection, you can enjoy catching even when the sun isn’t shining. Footwear is also important. Usually a good pair of soft soled sport shoes work well for your outing. If rain and/or rough conditions are expected, then it would be beneficial to switch to a more protective boot. Remember, it is important to be soft soled and able to provide good traction as many boat surfaces are slippery. Also, check to make sure your soles are clean before you board as any mud and/or stones could cause you to slip and fall. Sunscreen is important for protection while on the water. Keep in mind that the rays from the sun are also reflecting off the water and it doesn’t take too long to get sunburn. It is a good idea to thouroughly wash your hands after application of sunscreen unless you are certain it is loaded with fish-killer scent. This way you won’t transfer any unusual scent to your lure and bait. A hat and good sunglasses will provide you with added protection and comfort from the sun. Lake Erie’s waves are known to cause many good fishermen a dose of seasickness. With this in mind, there are a few things you can do to prevent becoming sick. It is important to try to get a good rest before your trip. If you limit the party the night before, you will probably feel better in the morning. If you are prone to seasickness, it is wise to use some sort of over the counter motion sickness medecine before the trip. Patches are also available and can be prescribed by your doctor. Unless you are buying an executive charter where all the food and beverages are provided, you will want to bring food, snacks and beverages. Remember that glass bottles are not allowed on most charters. It is wise to have a designated driver when you leave the dock if members of your group enjoy a few “brews” as Ohio DUI laws are as strict as other states. If you have any questions before you leave the dock, ask the captain for advice. The captain and/or first mate will usually be able to give you an idea of how to dress for the day before you leave. Don’t forget your fishing license! |
